Where we build ADUs around Portland
Oregon sets the statewide floor for ADUs; each city decides the details. Here is what shifts as you cross city lines.
What should Portland homeowners know before building an ADU?
As of October 2026, Portland's ADU rules sit in Zoning Code Chapter 33.205, largely reshaped by the Residential Infill Project. Points that come up on almost every lot:
- Two units. Many house lots can carry two ADUs, but only one may be attached to the house.
- Size. 800 sq ft or 75% of the house's living area, whichever is smaller, with an exception for basements in houses at least five years old.
- Parking. No extra on-site parking is required for an ADU.
- Fees. The city waives system development charges for ADUs whose owners sign a 10-year covenant against short-term rental.
